Cheering charms

When I read the Harry Potter books, one of the things I really loved was the idea of cheering charm.  Who wouldn't love to wave their wand and be able to dispel a bad mood?  It would be handy as a mother, but it would be great for those days when we wake up on the wrong side of the bed.

I had to admit to myself that I do have cheering charms.  Lots of them, and the problem is that I have so many that I can't always find the right one.  I store them all over the place, and generally have at least one available to any given time.  I have some that work on me, many that work on my husband, and a bunch that work on the kids.

Cheering charms are music.  Every member of my family has at least one song that cheers them up immediately.  Aiden has an entire playlist on my phone that we listen to on the way to school when he is grumpy.  It starts with "If It Wasna For Your Wellies" and "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and ends with "You Canna Shove Your Granny Off the Bus" and the soundtrack to Phineas and Ferb.  My husband loves death metal, and Gavin hums "Seven Nation Army" to himself all the time.  Right now, I love "Fuck You" by Lily Allen and "That's How You Know" by Nico & Vinz.

Finding a way to cope with negativity is an important life skill.  As long as it works for you and isn't a gateway to a less healthy behavior, I say go for it.  I'm off to enjoy the effects of music.
