Giving as an investment

Most Pagans probably understand that giving is an investment in the future.  In ritual and during spell work, offerings take the tangible abundance of now and send it's energy into the future in hopes that prosperity will bloom there.  The ancient Romans said "Do et dos"- depending on how precisely you translate it it means "I give that you may give" or "I give and you give". Something cannot come from nothing.

To grow prosperity, we must feed the soil in which we will plant the seeds.  Charitable giving is a way to sow prosperity for any community.  The more prosperity a community has, the more it can share. The more it shares, the tighter the bonds of community that individuals feel. People who have received some form of giving also tend to give back making the cycle self sustaining.

Today, the kids and I hauled beans, rice, peanut butter, canned tuna, cases of canned chili, fruit cocktail, tomato paste, and pineapple to school for their canned food drive.  My back is killing me as all of that weighed more than Aiden does, but it was worth it to see how excited the kids got as they saw how much food has been donated to help local people.

Today is a good day for giving. It's World Kindness Day.  There are as many ways to give as there are people.  Whatever you have, give some away whether it's time, money, energy, goods, or a service.  Not only does this spread positive energy around, it also sets into motion a wave of reciprocity, which is the very heart of why giving is magical.
